Itachi Uchiha is a fictional character in the Naruto manga and anime series created by Masashi Kishimoto. In the series, Itachi is the older brother of Sasuke Uchiha responsible for killing all the members of their clan, sparing only Sasuke. Itachi is treated as an antagonist for much of the series, however around the time of his death his villainous role is greatly downplayed. It is revealed that he was ordered by the former leaders of Konohagakure to kill the clan in order to prevent the Uchiha coup d’état which would have resulted in war. Despite his reservations, Itachi fulfilled his mission and defected from Konohagakure to become part of the criminal organization Akatsuki to continue protecting Konohagakure from behind the scenes.

Itachi has not been featured in the films and original video animations from Naruto, but he is a playable character in most video games of the series. His character has been very popular within readers from the manga, having ranked high in various popularity polls from the series. Also numerous anime and manga publications have commented on Itachi’s character. His fights are often noted to be “one of the best” in the series. His appearance as an antagonist has been praised by several writers although some considered his initial not to be very surprising. The gradual revelations of his past and its impact on the story has also been praised . Several types of merchandising have also been developed based on Itachi’s appearance including figurines and plush.

Within the series, Itachi is renowned for his mastery of all ninja abilities. From his days as a ninja of Konoha, Konoha ninja know by reputation not to underestimate Itachi, his killing of the Uchiha clan only elevating him to the classification of an extremely dangerous criminal. During his appearances he is shown to be very fast with his movements, attacking before his opponents have the chance to respond. Generally, however, Itachi does not actively participate in battles, remaining in a stationary position where he analyzes an opponent’s actions, only then acting in self-defense. In these instances he relies heavily on trapping opponents in illusions to keep them preoccupied, something he can do merely by pointing or looking at them.

As an Uchiha, Itachi possesses a Sharingan, an eye technique that gives the user heightened analytical capabilities. Before he assassinated the Uchiha he killed his best friend to advance his Sharingan to its next level: the Mangekyo Sharingan. When activated, the Mangekyo Sharingan changes the Sharingan’s appearance and grants Itachi with abilities derived from Japanese mythology. The first, Tsukuyomi, traps his opponent in an illusory realm in which Itachi is allowed to torture said opponent for what seems like days in a matter of moments. The second, Amaterasu, generates black flames at his focal point that will continue to burn until the target is reduced to ash. The final ability, Susanoo (creates a massive ethereal warrior that attacks on his behalf and uses the Yata no Kagami to protect him from all attacks. Despite the effectiveness of the techniques, use of the Mangekyo Sharingan deteriorates Itachi’s eyesight to the point of blindness. Only by taking Sasuke’s eyes can he restore his vision.

The Naruto anime and manga series takes place in a fictional universe where different countries vie for power by using ninja who can use supernatural abilities in combat. The Naruto storyline is divided into two parts, simply named Part I and Part II, with the latter taking place two-and-a-half years after the conclusion of Part I. The series’ storyline follows the adventures of a group of young ninja from the village of Konohagakure.

The titular character of the series is Naruto Uzumaki, an energetic ninja who wishes to become Hokage, the leader of Konohagakure. During the early part of the series, he is assigned to Team 7, during which he meets Sasuke Uchiha, a taciturn and highly skilled “genius” of the Uchiha clan; Sakura Haruno, who is infatuated with Sasuke yet has Naruto’s affection; and Kakashi Hatake, the quiet and mysterious leader of the team. Over the course of the series, Naruto interacts with and befriends several of his fellow ninja in Konohagakure as well as other villages. He also encounters the series’ antagonists, including Orochimaru, a former ninja of Konohagakure scheming to destroy his former home, and the elite ninja of the criminal organization Akatsuki.

While developing the series, Kishimoto created the three primary characters as a basis for the designs of the other three-person teams. He also utilized characters in other sh?nen manga as references in his design of the characters, a decision that was criticized by several anime and manga publications. The characters that Kishimoto developed were however praised for incorporating many of the better aspects of previous sh?nen characters, although many publications lamented the perceived lack of growth beyond such stereotypes. The visual presentation of the characters was commented on by reviewers, with praise and criticism given to Kishimoto’s work in the manga and anime adaptation.

As the two continued to grow, however, they became increasingly distant due to their shared affection for Sasuke Uchiha. During most of Part I, Sakura is infatuated with Sasuke, and spurns the advances of Naruto Uzumaki. After Sasuke leaves the village, she resolves to become stronger by training with Tsunade.
Naruto : Yaoi

Yaoi or Sh?nen-ai is a popular term for fictional media that focus on homoerotic or homoromantic male relationships, created by female authors and intended for female readers. Originally referring to a specific type of d?jinshi (self-published works) parody of mainstream anime and manga works, yaoi came to be used as a generic term for female-oriented manga, anime, dating sims, novels and d?jinshi featuring homosexual male relationships.

Yaoi began in the d?jinshi markets of Japan in the late 1970s/early 1980s as an outgrowth of sh?nen-ai (also known as “Juné” or “tanbi”), but whereas sh?nen-ai (both commercial and d?jinshi) were original works, yaoi were parodies of popular “straight” sh?nen anime and manga, such as Captain Tsubasa and Saint Seiya. BL creators and fans are careful to distinguish the genre from “gay manga,” which are created by and for gay men. However, some male manga creators have produced BL works.

Yaoi is an acronym created in the d?jinshi market of the late 1970s by Yasuko Sakata and Akiko Hatsu and popularised in the 1980s standing for Yama nashi, ochi nashi, imi nashi “No climax, no point, no meaning”. This phrase refers to how yaoi, as opposed to the “difficult to understand” sh?nen-ai of the Year 24 Group, focussed on “the yummy parts”. The phrase also parodies a classical style of plot structure. As of 1998, the term yaoi was considered “common knowledge to manga fans”. A joking alternative acronym among fujosi (female yaoi fans) for yaoi is Yamete, oshiri ga itai (”Stop, my butt hurts!”).

Another term for yaoi is 801. “801″ can be read as “yaoi” in the following form: the “short” reading of the number 8 is “ya”, 0 can be read as “o” – a western influence without doubt, while the short reading for 1 is “i” (see Japanese wordplay). For example, an Internet manga called Tonari no 801-chan, about an otaku guy who dates a fujoshi, has been adapted into a serialized sh?jo manga and a live-action film. 801-chan, the mascot of a Japanese shopping centre, is used in the manga.

Yaoi has become an umbrella term in the West for male/male manga or Japan-inspired comics, and it is preferentially used by American manga publishers. The actual name of the genre aimed toward women in Japan is called ‘BL’ or ‘Boy’s Love’. BL is aimed at the sh?jo and josei demographics, but is considered a separate category. Yaoi is used in Japan to include d?jinshi and sex scenes, and does not include gei comi, which is by gay men and for gay men.

The terms yaoi and sh?nen-ai are sometimes used by western fans to differentiate between the contents of the genre. In this case, “yaoi” is used to describe titles that contain sex scenes and other sexually explicit themes and “sh?nen-ai” is used to describe titles that focus more on romance and do not include explicit sexual content. When using the terms in this way, Gravitation is considered to be shonen-ai due to its focus on the characters’ careers rather than their love life, while the Gravitation Remix and Megamix doujinshi by the same author, which emphasize the characters’ sexual relationships, would be considered yaoi. Sometimes the word hentai is used as an additional modifier with yaoi – “hentai yaoi” – to denote the most explicit titles. However, Kaze to Ki no Uta was groundbreaking in its depictions of “openly sexual relationships”, spurring the development of the sh?nen-ai genre in sh?jo manga. The use of yaoi to denote those works with explicit scenes sometimes clashes with use of the word to describe the genre as a whole. Yaoi can be used by fans as a label for anime or manga-based slash fiction.

Naruto Gaara

Gaara is a fictional character in the Naruto manga and anime series created by Masashi Kishimoto. Kishimoto designed Gaara as a foil to the series’ titular character, Naruto Uzumaki, as the two were born through similar circumstances, but develop vastly different personalities as they deal with their troubled upbringing. Initially introduced as an antagonist and Naruto’s rival, the two eventually develop a bond as kindred spirits and become close friends as the series progresses.

In the anime and manga, Gaara is a ninja affiliated with Sunagakure, and is the son of Sunagakure’s leader, the Fourth Kazekage. As a child, his father attempted to turn him into a human weapon by placing a tailed beast into him, and he was ostracized by the Sunagakure villagers. As a result, he develops into a ruthless killer, slaying others without remorse, and treating his siblings Kankuro and Temari with contempt. His battle with Naruto during the series changes this outlook, and he begins to aid others in order to emulate Naruto. In Part II of the series, he becomes Sunagakure’s Fifth Kazekage. Gaara has appeared in several pieces of Naruto media, including the second featured film in the series, the third original video animation, and several video games.

Gaara has made several appearances outside of the Naruto anime and manga. He is present in the second Naruto feature film, Naruto the Movie 2: Legend of the Stone of Gelel. He protects the Land of Wind from an assault by Haido, the antagonist of the film, and later battles the lightning user Ranke, one of Haido’s subordinates, and defeats her. Gaara is also present in the third original video animation released in the series, in which he participates in a tournament of various characters from across the series. Naruto video games commonly feature Gaara, including the Clash of Ninja and Ultimate Ninja series. In some games, he uses his Shukaku form for combat, as well as other moves not seen in the anime or manga. Naruto Shipp?den: Gekitou Ninja Taisen EX marks the first appearance of Gaara in his Part II appearance in a video game.

Gaara has ranked highly in the popularity polls for the series, continuously placing in the top ten and reaching seventh place once. The last such poll was in 2006, in which Gaara was in 7th place. Several pieces of Gaara merchandise been released, including key chains of his Part I and Part II appearance, plush dolls, and a limited edition figurine.

Anime and manga publications have praised and criticised Gaara’s character. IGN noted that Gaara was an “anti-Naruto”, possessing a “dark, solemn character” as opposed to Naruto’s continuous cheer and excitement. In another review, IGN also called Gaara’s background “emotional” and “a tad creepy” due to the disparity between the development of Naruto’s and Gaara’s personalities. Anime News Network celebrated the “depth and emotion” that Naruto’s and Gaara’s similarities added to the plot, and commented that “nowhere in the entire series run does Naruto shine brighter than in the peak period of his battle against Gaara”. They also complimented Kishimoto’s visual presentation of Gaara in the manga, referring to “chilling [glimpses] of Gaara’s crazed, exposed face”..

Sasuke Uchiha is a fictional character in the Naruto manga and anime series created by Masashi Kishimoto. He was created as a rival and foil to the series’ titular character, Naruto Uzumaki, with his design causing difficulties for Kishimoto during drawing the manga scenes, although he has grown to enjoy drawing Sasuke.

In the anime and manga, Sasuke is a member of the Uchiha clan, a highly skilled clan of ninjas allied to the village of Konohagakure. His primary motivation throughout the series is to avenge the destruction of his entire clan by killing his brother, Itachi Uchiha, a task he pursues at all costs. While he was initially cold and singularly driven by his revenge, he becomes more empathetic through his relationships with other characters, notably Naruto Uzumaki, whom he comes to consider as a rival. Sasuke has additionally appeared in several of the featured movies in the series, as well as several other media relating to the series, including several video games and OVAs.

Several anime and manga publications have provided acclaim and criticism of Sasuke’s character. While many reviewers have noted his cold and detached attitude and abilities, he has been viewed as a stereotypical “rival” in the mold of several similar characters in other sh?nen manga. His personality has also been subject to criticism, with many finding it difficult to like or sympathize with Sasuke’s character; IGN jokingly labeled Sasuke as an “emo-kid.” Nevertheless, Sasuke has been highly popular with the Naruto reader base, placing high in several popularity polls. Merchandise based on Sasuke has also been released, including action figures and plush dolls.

Sasuke has made several appearances outside of the Naruto anime and manga. He appears in all three of the original video animations produced for the series, helping Naruto and Konohamaru to find a four leaf clover in the first original video animation, joining his team in escorting a ninja named Shibuki to his village and helping him fight the missing-nin that stole the village’s “Hero’s Water” in the second, and participating in a tournament in the third. Sasuke also makes an appearance in the first two Naruto featured films, although he is only briefly present in a memory segment in the second. He also makes his first Part II appearance in a film in the second Naruto: Shipp?den movie.

Sasuke is a common playable character in Naruto video games, including the Clash of Ninja series and the Ultimate Ninja series. In some games, it is possible to unlock and play as a version of him with the cursed seal active. Due to his lack of appearances in early Naruto Shipp?den chapters and episodes, he does not appear in any games based on Naruto Shipp?den until Gekitou Ninja Taisen EX 2.

Shikamaru Nara is a fictional character in the Naruto manga and anime series created by Masashi Kishimoto. In the anime and manga, Shikamaru is a ninja affiliated with the village of Konohagakure. He is a member of Team 10, a group of ninja consisting of himself, Choji Akimichi, Ino Yamanaka, and team leader Asuma Sarutobi. Shikamaru is portrayed as a lazy character, unwilling to apply his prodigious intelligence; Kishimoto has noted that he likes Shikamaru due to his easygoing nature. Outside of the Naruto anime and manga, Shikamaru has appeared in two of the feature films in the series: Naruto the Movie 2: Legend of the Stone of Gelel and Naruto: Shipp?den the Movie, as well as several other media relating to the series, including video games and original video animations.

Numerous anime and manga publications have commented on Shikamaru’s character. Many reviewers commented on his laziness and intelligence, and noted his transformation into a leader; Anime News Network celebrated Shikamaru’s emergence as “an unlikely hero” in the Naruto storyline. Shikamaru has also been highly popular with the Naruto reader base, placing high in several popularity polls. Merchandise based on Shikamaru has been released, including action figures, key chains, and patches.

Shikamaru is a highly unenthusiastic person, and he attempts to go through life with minimum effort. In his free time, he takes naps, watches clouds, and plays strategy games such as shogi and go. When put into a situation in which he needs to exert effort, he attempts to try to find a way to avoid it; for instance, he will forfeit battles or pretend to be preoccupied. In the instances where he can not avoid these situations, Shikamaru tends to remark “how troublesome”. Another aspect of his unenthusiasm is his dislike for bossy women, as he refers to them as “a pain”. Despite this perception, he has expressed an interest in marriage and raising a family with a son and daughter.

Contrary to his lazy tendencies, Shikamaru is extremely intelligent; his teacher, Asuma Sarutobi, determined that Shikamaru’s IQ was over 200. Shikamaru works well with his teammates Choji Akimichi and Ino Yamanaka, as the trio’s fathers were in the same team in their youth. Among his teammates, Shikamaru is closest to Choji, who repays Shikamaru’s confidence with unyielding loyalty. Shikamaru also has a strong bond with Asuma and often spends time with him playing strategy games. After Asuma’s death, he vows to protect Kurenai Yuhi, who is pregnant with Asuma’s child.

Naruto is an ongoing Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto. The plot tells the story of Naruto Uzumaki, an adolescent ninja who constantly searches for recognition and aspires to become a Hokage, the ninja in his village that is acknowledged as the leader and the strongest of all. The series is based on a one-shot comic by Kishimoto that was published in the August 1997 issue of Akamaru Jump.

The manga was first published by Shueisha in 1999 in the 43rd issue of Japan’s Weekly Sh?nen Jump magazine. Currently, the manga is still being serialized with forty-five tank?bon volumes having been released. The manga would be later adapted into an anime produced by Studio Pierrot and Aniplex. It premiered across Japan on the terrestrial TV Tokyo network and the anime satellite television network Animax on October 3, 2002. The first series lasted 220 episodes, while Naruto: Shippuden, a sequel to the original series, has been airing since February 15, 2007. Apart from anime series, Studio Pierrot has developed five movies for the series and several original video animations (OVAs). Other types of merchandise include light novels, video games and trading cards developed by several companies.

Viz Media has licensed the manga and anime for North American production. Viz has been publishing the series in their Shonen Jump magazine, and has also been releasing the volumes. The series aired in the United States and Canada in 2005, and later in the United Kingdom and Australia in 2006 and 2007 respectively. The films, as well as most OVAs from the series, have also been released by Viz, with the first film premiering on cinemas. Naruto: Shippuden has also been announced to premier in 2009 in the United States.

Serialized in Viz’s Shonen Jump magazine, Naruto has become one of the company’s best-selling manga series. As of volume 36, the manga has sold over 71 million copies in Japan. The English adaptation of the series has also appeared in the USA Today Booklist several times and volume 11 won the Quil Award in 2006. Reviewers from the series have praised the balance between fighting and comedy scenes, as well as the characters’ personalities. However, some of them have noted the series to have concepts which appear in several sh?nen series.

He was created as one of the series’ main antagonists, and intended to represent the opposite of the protagonists’ morals and values.

In the anime and manga, Orochimaru is a former ninja of the village of Konohagakure, and leads his own ninja village, Otogakure, in hopes of destroying his former home. During his time in Konohagakure, Orochimaru distinguished himself as one of the village’s most powerful ninja; however, his desire for power led him to obtain a means for immortality by transferring between different host bodies. This desire for a host is one of his driving motivations throughout the series, resulting in his desire to acquire Sasuke Uchiha due to his powerful genetic heritage. Orochimaru has appeared in media outside the Naruto anime and manga, including several video games.

Several anime and manga publications have praised and criticized Orochimaru’s character. As one of the series’ premier villains, he has been praised in this regard; IGN compared his character to Darth Vader of Star Wars fame. His lack of redeeming qualities and open malevolence was also praised by reviewers, with Mania.com calling him the “first real villain” of the series. Among the Naruto reader base, Orochimaru has been popular, ranking within the top twenty characters in several polls. Numerous pieces of merchandise in Orochimaru’s likeness have also been released, including action figures and plush dolls.

As one of the villains in the story, Kishimoto created Orochimaru as an antithesis to the protagonists’ values. His snake-like appearance and related features were intended to make it easier for the reader to recognize that he is a villain. In an interview, Kishimoto asserted that making the villains “flamboyant” was one of his “guiding principles,” and attributed this to his desire to have the villains have a “powerful aura.”

Following this theme of distinguishing villains, Kishimoto attempted to make Orochimaru’s face appear “pasty and sickly,” which serves to emphasize the “scary looks” that Kishimoto frequently has Orochimaru performing in the manga. As these occurrences are his “trademark,” Kishimoto modifies Orochimaru’s appearance and the scene to focus on Orochimaru’s face; for instance, highlights that are normally added to Orochimaru’s hair are removed and the background is blanked out to create a “creepy atmosphere.”
